Illuxcon – IX Art Show

We’ll be thinking of all our friends at the show this week. We're still here – but we're not there! And for anyone who doesn't know about the fabulous annual gathering of science fiction and fantasy artists, then do look at their website.

Life has been busy for us though. John Harris has been working on some private commissions which we can't yet tell you much about.

Ian Miller

Ian has produced this Shard Dragon for Arcane Tinmen.
He's also produced two paintings for Sorcery: Contested Realm. Here is The River of Fire . . .
And Geistwood. These are just details but you can see the whole images here, and they are available as signed archival prints.

Worldcon in Glasgow


We had some great times at the convention. Jim Burns had the best spot in the show.
Fred Gambino brought a great selection of work, some connected with his new novel, and he sold out.
And John Harris produced some sketches, most of which have sold now but there are a few left. This is the Test Bed.

And from the Vaults


I've been sitting on one or two paintings from many years ago, which I feel I should now sell. In the early days of 'Young Artists' we represented Richard Clifton-Dey who produced many significant science fiction cover illustrations which Jane Frank kindly sold for us a few years ago. This was his War of the Worlds.
I have kept one or two of his other paintings though, as they aren't SF but they are quite special. This one was a White Horse whisky ad which was reproduced, life-size, on the wall of an old warehouse on the main road into London from the west. Seen from the road, it would have looked as if the horse was just about to take a leap and to make it more real, Richard painted it at an angle, (as did Holbein with that skull). There was no digital help in those days.
Fond of a drop of Scotch himself, he'd usually have a glass ready for me when I went to collect work from him – usually in the early morning but in those days drink-driving was the norm.  Many of us remember Richard with great affection so if you're interested, let me know. The painting is 22 x 10.5 inches and you'll have to agree that the hand lettering on the bottle is impressive.
